Odds Ratio in Betting: What It Means

What does the odds ratio mean in betting?

The odds ratio is one set of odds divided by another. In betting it answers a simple question: how much more likely is this outcome than that one, in odds terms? You take the true odds of event A, divide by the true odds of event B, and you get a single number you can compare.

If the ratio is 1.0, the two outcomes are equally likely. Above 1.0, the first outcome is favored. Below 1.0, the second one is. That’s it. No calculus, no model.

Bettors use this constantly without naming it. Comparing a -110 prop to a +145 prop is an odds ratio problem. So is asking whether a player hits a rebounds line more often at home than on the road.

Odds vs. probability (they are not the same thing)

Probability is chances over total attempts. Odds are chances for divided by chances against. A 60% hit rate is a probability of 0.60. The odds are 0.60 / 0.40 = 1.5, or “3 to 2.”

That distinction matters because the odds ratio only works with odds, not raw percentages. Mix them up and your number is meaningless.

  • Probability: p = hits / total. Range 0 to 1.
  • Odds: p / (1 – p). Range 0 to infinity.
  • Odds ratio: odds A / odds B. Range 0 to infinity, with 1.0 as the neutral point.

How do you calculate an odds ratio from two prop lines?

Four steps. Do them in this order and you can’t get lost.

  1. Convert each American price to implied probability.
  2. Turn each probability into odds: p / (1 – p).
  3. Divide the first odds by the second.
  4. Read the result against 1.0.

Here’s a worked example using two real props from a StatsBench cheatsheet snapshot dated August 3, 2026. Jonquel Jones of the Liberty had a double-double prop priced at +145 and a points-rebounds-assists line at -111 in the same Liberty vs. Storm game.

The +145 double-double implies roughly 40.8%, so odds of about 0.69. The -111 PRA line implies roughly 52.6%, so odds of about 1.11. Divide 1.11 by 0.69 and you get an odds ratio near 1.6.

Translation: the book priced her PRA over as about 1.6 times more likely, in odds terms, than the double-double. That’s a big gap between two props that both depend on her filling up a box score.

Why the number is useful and where it lies to you

The odds ratio is great for comparing. It’s terrible for predicting on its own.

It’s useful because it strips away units. Percentages, American odds, decimals, fractions: they all collapse into one comparable figure. When you’re deciding between two versions of the same idea (a points line or a PRA line on the same player), the ratio tells you what the market thinks the relative gap is.

It lies to you in three ways:

  • Vig contaminates it. Raw book prices include the hold. Compare two vigged prices and you’re comparing two dirty numbers. De-vig first if you want a fair comparison.
  • It hides sample size. A 6-of-10 hit rate and a 60-of-100 hit rate give the same odds. They are not the same evidence. Our sample size guide covers how much you actually need.
  • Big ratios look dramatic on tiny bases. An outcome going from 2% to 4% doubles the odds ratio and still almost never happens.

Reading real prop prices with an odds ratio

Here are six props from that same August 2026 StatsBench cheatsheet snapshot. Every one of them sat at a 60% hit rate over its last 10 games, but the prices are all over the place. That price spread is exactly what the odds ratio measures.

Look at the two Jones props at -111 and -110. The odds ratio between them is basically 1.0. Identical recent hit rate, identical price, so nothing to arbitrage between them. The interesting one is the double-double at +145 next to the PRA at -111.

Same player, same game, same 6-of-10 recent form, and the market says one is far less likely than the other. Is that fair? Probably, since a double-double needs both categories to land while PRA lets one carry the others. The ratio doesn’t tell you it’s fair. It tells you where to point your research.

Odds ratio vs. EV: which one should you bet on?

Bet on EV. Use the ratio to explore.

Expected value compares a price to your estimate of the true probability. It’s an absolute measure and it tells you whether to fire. The odds ratio is a relative measure and tells you nothing about whether either side is priced correctly. Two terribly priced props can have a perfectly reasonable ratio between them.

In that snapshot, the Jones PRA over 25.5 carried a 1.1% edge at -111, the largest of the WNBA props listed. That edge figure, not the ratio, is what would put it on a shortlist. Three practical ways to use it

1. Compare two props on the same player

Points, rebounds, PRA, and double-double props on one player are all correlated. Compute the ratio between the versions and ask whether the market’s implied gap matches the way that player actually scores. Our PRA guide digs into why combined stats behave differently from single categories.

2. Compare splits

Home vs. road. Rested vs. back-to-back. Against top-10 defenses vs. bottom-10. Turn each split’s hit rate into odds, divide, and you get a clean number for how much the split actually moves things. Just watch the sample. Ten-game splits are hints, not proof.

3. Sanity check a line move

If a price moves from -110 to -140, the odds go from about 1.10 to about 1.40, a ratio near 1.27. Now you know the market repriced the outcome by roughly 27% in odds terms. That’s a much clearer read than “it moved 30 cents.”

Where the term comes from

The odds ratio is a standard tool in statistics and epidemiology, where researchers use it to compare outcome rates between two groups. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using probabilities instead of odds. Dividing 60% by 40% is not an odds ratio, it’s a ratio of probabilities. Different number, different meaning.
  • Skipping the de-vig. Book prices are inflated. Compare fair prices, not retail ones.
  • Treating a ratio as an edge. It isn’t one. It has no bankroll implications by itself.
  • Reversing the order and forgetting. A ratio of 0.63 and a ratio of 1.6 say the same thing pointed opposite ways. Label which is the numerator.
