Learning how to bet on football (soccer) comes down to three things: knowing which market you are actually backing, understanding what the price implies, and having a reason to think that price is wrong. Everything else is decoration. Get those three right and you stop losing money to sloppy thinking.
This guide covers the markets you meet on a normal weekend, how to read prices in decimal and American format, and the research routine that turns a hunch into a bet you can defend out loud.
What football markets can you bet on?
Football has more markets than any other sport, but nearly all of them are variations on four families: the result, the goals, the players, and the incidents.
| Market | What you are backing | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|
| 1X2 (match result) | Home win, draw, or away win | Three-way price |
| Double chance / draw no bet | Two of the three outcomes covered | Shorter price |
| Asian handicap | The result after a goal adjustment | Two-way, draw removed |
| Over/under goals | Total goals against a line (1.5, 2.5, 3.5) | Two-way |
| Both teams to score | Each side finds the net | Two-way, yes or no |
| Correct score | The exact scoreline | Long prices |
| Player props | Shots, tackles, fouls won, saves, goals | Over/under per player |
| Cards and corners | Bookings, corner counts | Over/under, often by team |
Start with the result and totals markets. They are liquid, the prices are tight, and the logic is easy to follow. Player props are where it gets interesting, because books now price dozens of small markets on players most casual fans never watch closely.
Two guides worth reading next: our over 2.5 goals predictions page for totals, and BTTS predictions for the both-teams-to-score market. If the long prices pull you in, the correct score predictions page explains how those markets behave.

How do you read football odds?
Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked, stake included. A price of 2.10 (+110) means 10 units comes back as 21. American odds flip the frame: +110 means you profit 110 on a 100 stake, while -137 means you risk 137 to win 100. Same bet, different grammar.
Every price hides a probability. Divide 1 by the decimal price and you have the implied chance. At 2.10 that is 47.6%. If you think the true chance is higher, the bet has value. If it is lower, you are paying for someone else’s edge.
Then add the book’s margin. A two-way market at 1.91 (-110) on both sides implies 52.4% twice, which adds up to 104.8%. That extra 4.8% is the vig, and it is why a coin-flip bettor still bleeds over time. Our implied probability calculator does the division for you, the vig and hold calculator shows how much margin sits inside a market, and the odds converter switches between decimal, fractional and American in one place.
How to bet on football with a repeatable process
Here is the routine. It takes about fifteen minutes per match once you are used to it, and it beats a gut feeling every time.
- Confirm the lineups. Rotation kills more props bets than bad analysis does. A winger who starts on the bench does not need a missed shot to lose your bet.
- Pick one market per match. Chasing four angles on the same fixture usually means averaging out your own edge.
- Check the sample, not the story. Look at the record behind a hit rate (7/10, 5/6, 4/8) and ask whether the role that produced it still exists.
- Price it across books. The same line can sit at 1.80 in one place and 1.95 in another. StatsBench compares the best price across 30+ sportsbooks, DFS apps and exchanges, which is the cheapest edge available.
- Size it before you place it. A good price on a stake you cannot afford is still a bad bet.
Our football predictions page runs that order for the day’s fixtures, and the Premier League predictions page does it club by club.
What does a real football props board look like?
Advice is easy to give. Here is a dated snapshot from StatsBench, pulled from a November 2026 slate, showing hit rate, sample and best price sitting next to each other on the same screen.
| Player (match) | Market | Hit rate | Best price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ángel Pérez (Alavés vs Sevilla) | Shots over 0.5 | 90% (9/10) | 1.63 (-159) |
| Lucien Agoumé (Sevilla vs Alavés) | Tackles over 2.5 | 70% (7/10) | 1.56 (-180) |
| Gianluca Busio (Venezia vs Udinese) | Tackles over 1.5 | 83.3% (5/6) | 1.65 (-155) |
| Corentin Tolisso (Lyon vs Real Sociedad) | Shots on target over 0.5 | 80% (8/10) | 1.87 (-115) |
| Michal Gurgul (Lecce vs Benfica) | Shots on target over 0.5 | 80% (4/5) | 5.75 (+475) |
| R. O’Donnell (Derby vs Bolton) | Saves over 2.5 | 50% (4/8) | 1.57 (-175) |
Read that table slowly, because it is the whole lesson. Tolisso clearing 0.5 shots on target in 8 of 10 at 1.87 (-115) is a different bet from Gurgul doing it in 4 of 5 at 5.75 (+475). One is a fair sample at a fair price. The other is a small sample at a price the market clearly does not believe.
And look at the saves line. A 4/8 record is 50%, but 1.57 (-175) implies 63.7%. Backing every busy goalkeeper because the hit rate looks tidy is how bettors donate. A 70% record needs a true chance above 62.9% just to break even at 1.59 (-170), but only 47.6% at 2.10 (+110).
That is what the price is for. Every prop on the board also carries a +EV % for the over and the under, and you can sort by Best EV to see where the model and the market disagree most. Treat that number as a long-run signal, not a promise on Saturday.
The Premier League prop board is where most readers start, and the La Liga prop board shows the same layout.

Where do football bettors actually find value?
Three places, roughly in order of how often they pay.
Tackles and fouls on defenders and holding midfielders
Roles are stable, so the numbers are stable. A wing-back asked to press will rack up tackles whether the opponent is bottom of the table or third. Dewsbury-Hall at 7/10 for tackles over 1.5 priced 1.59 (-170), or Carlton Morris at 7/10 for tackles over 0.5 at 1.95 (-105), both come from the job description rather than a hot streak. That is the kind of line a book struggles to price tightly.
Goalkeeper saves
Saves track team style more than keeper quality. A side that concedes territory will hand its keeper volume. Daniel Heuer Fernandes at 8/10 for saves over 2.5 at 1.61 (-165) and Jacob Widell Zetterström at 8/10 for the same line at 1.57 (-175) are the profile. But check the price against the record every time, because a keeper with a 50% record at 1.57 is not a value bet, he is a name.
Cards and fouls
Bookings markets move slowly, and refereeing style matters as much as the player. A holding midfielder who commits two fouls a game is a better card candidate than a striker who commits one. Our yellow card betting tips guide goes deeper on how to read a referee. Just be honest about the variance: a 3/10 card record at 2.85 (+185) is roughly what the market expects, not a bargain you found first.
Does the Monday night football slot change anything?
A little. The Monday fixture is the last of the round, so team news lands late and a club that played in Europe on Thursday may rotate. Late lineup confirmation is a genuine edge if you are patient, because prices are set before the confirmed XI in plenty of markets. Do not treat the slot as an angle on its own. Treat it as a reason to wait.
How should you size a football bet?
Set your unit before you open a card. Flat staking, where every bet is the same percentage of bankroll, is boring and it works. If you want to scale stakes to the size of your edge, the Kelly criterion calculator shows the maths, and most bettors should use a fraction of what it suggests.
Accumulators are where new bettors get hurt. Every leg adds margin, so a four-fold multiplies the book’s edge along with your payout. If you like them anyway, the parlay calculator will at least show you the true combined price before you commit.
One last thing worth saying plainly: bet only where it is legal and at the legal age where you live. Football betting should be entertainment with a budget attached. Any edge is a long-run thing measured over hundreds of bets with plenty of variance along the way, never a certainty about one match.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 1X2 mean in football betting?
1X2 is the three-way match result market: 1 is the home win, X is the draw, and 2 is the away win. Because football allows a draw, all three outcomes carry their own price, and the three implied probabilities plus the book’s margin add up to more than 100%.
Is it better to bet singles or accumulators?
Singles, for almost everyone. Each leg of an accumulator carries its own margin, so the book’s edge compounds while your probability of winning shrinks. Accas are fine as entertainment if the stake is small, but they are a poor way to build a long-run record.
What is an Asian handicap and why do bettors use it?
An Asian handicap gives one team a head start or a deficit in goals, which removes the draw and turns the match into a two-way market. That makes it easier to price and usually cheaper on margin than the 1X2, which is why sharper bettors gravitate to it.
How many player props should I bet on one match?
One or two, and only where you have a specific reason. Every additional bet on the same fixture adds exposure to the same variables, like team selection and game state, so a stack of correlated props is really one bigger bet wearing a disguise.
What happens to my bet if a player does not start?
Most player prop markets are voided, and your stake is returned, if the player does not take the field. Rules differ between books on how much playing time counts, so check the specific market rules before you stake, especially on substitutes and injury doubts.
