This page is refreshed every day with the model’s board, and today is October 24, 2026. Eight names cleared the volume floor for tonight’s slate, and the StatsBench first basket model has a probability and a fair price on every one of them.
Start with the honest part. Every first basket bet is a longshot. Tonight’s top number is 15.7%, so even the model’s favorite loses roughly five times out of six. The model’s graded log sits at 273 predictions, 43 hits (16%) and +116.7u at posted odds, and those are past results that don’t promise anything about tonight.
How tonight’s NBA first basket picks stack up
All eight rows on the board are tier PASS. That means the model does not recommend betting any of them. A pass is a watchlist entry, not a play.
The model grades each candidate on six conditions and the row shows which ones it cleared. Tonight the strongest cards are Joel Embiid at 5 of 6 and Bam Adebayo at 4 of 6, but only one player on the whole board has a market price posted, and that price is the wrong side of fair. So the board stays a watchlist.
Victor Wembanyama, first basket (SAS @ DAL, 8:00 PM EDT)

The model gives him 15.7%, the highest number on the board, which converts to fair odds of +536. No market price is posted yet, so there is no edge to measure either way. The tip-off case is loud: San Antonio wins the jump 83% of the time with Wembanyama taking it, and the game context has him 5-1 across six tips against Daniel Gafford. His season first-basket rate is 22% (8 FB in 195 starts) with a 20% first-shot rate and 2 first buckets in his last 5 starts, yet the model still tags it a PASS because it clears only 4 of 6 conditions. Watch it, don’t bet it blind.
Nikola Jokic, first basket (NOP @ DEN, 9:00 PM EDT)

Jokic lands at 15.3% (fair +553) with no odds posted and a PASS on 3 of 6 conditions. He wins the tip 58% of the time and takes the jumper himself, but his first-shot rate is 5%, and that number is what caps him. The season first-basket rate is 17% (2 FB in 493 starts) with 1 first bucket in his last 5 starts and an 8% home split. In the last meeting between these two, Jamal Murray scored first, not Jokic.
Joel Embiid, first basket (MIL @ PHI, 7:30 PM EDT)

This is the only row with a posted price, and it’s the cleanest lesson on the page. FanDuel lists Embiid at +410 while the model’s 14.8% makes fair odds +573, so the model edge is -24.3%. He clears 5 of 6 conditions (volume floor, tip edge, first-shot taker, hot streak, FB rate), wins the tip 66% of the time with an 8-0 career mark against Myles Turner, and owns a 23% season first-basket rate (4 FB in 324 starts) on a 25% first-shot rate. None of that rescues +410. The model passes.
Alperen Sengun, first basket (HOU @ ATL, 8:30 PM EDT)

Sengun comes in at 13.9% (fair +622), no odds posted, PASS on 3 of 6 conditions. He takes the tip for Houston at a 55% clip and holds a 2-1 edge in three tips against Onyeka Okongwu. The shot profile is the problem: a 5% first-shot rate and 0 first buckets in his last 5 starts. Amen Thompson opened the scoring in the last meeting between these teams.
Donovan Mitchell, first basket (BKN @ CLE, 7:30 PM EDT)

Mitchell checks in at 13.4% (fair +644) with no odds posted and a PASS on 3 of 6 conditions. Cleveland’s 71% tip-win probability is real, but it belongs to Jarrett Allen, and the game context backs that up: Allen is 3-0 in three tips against Day’Ron Sharpe and scored first in the last meeting. Mitchell’s first-shot rate is 5% with 0 first buckets in his last 5 starts. A season first-basket rate of 16% (1 FB in 442 starts) says the same thing.
Bam Adebayo, first basket (MIA @ CHA, 6:00 PM EDT)

Bam sits at 12.8% (fair +684), no odds posted, PASS on 4 of 6 conditions. He takes the jumper for Miami and wins it 74% of the time, which lines up with Charlotte’s 26% home tip-win probability, and he’s 1-0 against Moussa Diabate in tips. His 25% first-shot rate is the best shot profile among the pass rows. But 0 first buckets in his last 5 starts and a 27% home split keep the model at 12.8%.
How the first basket model works
Two stages decide the number. First the tip: an ELO-style model estimates who wins the jump from jump-ball history, and the row prints that tip-win probability along with the jumper. Then the shot: a blend of the player’s first-shot share and his first-basket rate decides who gets the first attempt and converts it.
Everything above is a calibrated model estimate, not a historical hit rate. When you see 15.3% for Jokic, read it as the model’s price on the event, not as a claim that he does it 15 times in 100 games. Model edge only exists where a market price is shown, so a row marked no odds posted gets a probability and a fair price and nothing else. Prices come from StatsBench’s own odds feed, which covers 30+ sportsbooks, DFS apps and exchanges and refreshes throughout the day.
Betting responsibly on longshot props
These are lottery-ticket props and they behave like it. A good model hits the first basket around one time in six, which means long losing runs are normal, not a sign that something broke. Bet within your means, treat it as entertainment, and never chase a cold streak. 21+, no guarantees, and results vary over any sample you’ll actually live through. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the model’s top NBA first basket play for October 24, 2026?
Victor Wembanyama carries the highest probability on the board at 15.7%, which converts to fair odds of +536. It’s still a PASS because no market price is posted and the row clears only 4 of 6 conditions. No player on tonight’s board is a recommended bet.
What does the PASS tier mean on this page?
PASS means the model does not recommend betting the row at current conditions or prices. Treat it as a watchlist entry, either because the price isn’t available or because the probability doesn’t clear the model’s bar.
Why does the model pass on Joel Embiid when he clears 5 of 6 conditions?
Because of the price. FanDuel has him at +410 while the model’s 14.8% makes fair odds +573, so the model edge is -24.3%. A negative edge means the market is shorter than the model’s number, which is a pass no matter how good the tip-off case looks.
How often does the first basket model hit?
The graded log reads 273 predictions, 43 hits (16%) and +116.7u at posted odds. That 16% hit rate is the whole point: most first basket bets lose, and those results are past performance, not a promise about tonight.
Where do the first basket odds on this page come from?
StatsBench’s own odds feed, which covers 30+ sportsbooks, DFS apps and exchanges and refreshes throughout the day. Some rows show no odds posted yet, and in those cases the page only carries the model’s probability and fair price.
