Every player prop has three moving parts. Read them in this order.

  • The stat: hits, total bases, strikeouts, kills, headshots, points, shots on goal.
  • The line: the threshold you’re betting over or under (0.5, 1.5, 16.5).

The line and the price work together. A 0.5 hits line at -250 and a 1.5 hits line at +150 can describe the same player on the same night. One asks “does he do it at all,” the other asks “does he do it twice.” Same skill, very different risk.

How to convert prop odds into implied probability

Implied probability is the break-even win rate a price demands. The math is short.

  • Negative odds: odds ÷ (odds + 100). So -110 becomes 110 ÷ 210 = 52.4%.
  • Positive odds: 100 ÷ (odds + 100). So +150 becomes 100 ÷ 250 = 40%.

Why both sides add up to more than 100%

Take a prop where the over is -115 and the under is -105. Convert both: 53.5% and 51.2%. Add them and you get 104.7%. That extra 4.7% is the vig (also called juice or hold), and it’s the book’s cut.

Removing it is called de-vigging. What’s left is the market’s fair estimate of the true probability. That fair number is what you actually compare against your research.

Now the question is simple: do you think this hitter walks in more than about 35% of his games against this pitcher? If your data says yes, the price is interesting. If it says 30%, pass.

How to read player prop odds against a real hit rate

Look at the spread. Every one of those props hit 6 of 10, but the prices demand wildly different break-even rates. The Bleday strikeout prop needs 66% just to tread water, and a 10-game sample at 60% doesn’t clear that. The Sal Stewart hits prop only needs 35.6%.

Same hit rate, totally different bets. That’s the whole lesson.

Why a 10-game hit rate isn’t proof

Six out of ten sounds convincing. It isn’t, on its own. Ten games is a tiny sample, and the difference between 6/10 and 5/10 is a single ground ball finding grass. StatsBench reports the sample size next to every hit rate for exactly that reason.

Treat a short-sample hit rate as a starting point, then ask why it might hold:

  • Has the player’s role changed (lineup spot, usage, minutes, map role)?

  • Is the number driven by two huge games or by steady production?

Where edge percentage fits in

Edge is the gap between your estimated probability and the price’s implied probability, expressed as expected value. In that same September 2026 snapshot, the edges attached to those MLB props were small: 1% on De La Cruz total bases, 1% on the Stephenson combo, a fraction of a percent on several others.

That’s normal. Real prop edges are usually thin, and most of the fat ones you think you’ve found are actually stale data or a line you misread. A 1% edge is still an edge. Books also disagree on props more than on sides and totals, because prop markets are thinner and priced with less attention. That disagreement is your friend.

The math never changes, but the context does. Esports props like map 1 kills or map 1 headshots move on roster and role changes, and the samples are shorter.
