Hit Rate vs Edge: Which Prop Number Wins?

Hit rate vs edge is the first fork in the road for anyone reading a player prop screen. Hit rate tells you how often a player has cleared a line. Edge tells you whether the price on that line is worth taking. They answer different questions, and confusing them is the fastest way to talk yourself into a bad bet.

Here’s the short version. Hit rate is history. Edge is math on the current price. You need both, in that order, and neither one alone is a reason to bet.

What does hit rate actually measure?

Hit rate is the share of recent games where a player finished over (or under) a given number. If a prop reads 60% hit (6/10), the player cleared that line in six of his or her last ten games.

That’s useful. It’s also fragile. Ten games is a small sample, and a 6/10 result is only one game away from 5/10 or 7/10. Nothing about that number promises anything for the next game.

Three things quietly break a hit rate:

  • Line movement. A 70% hit rate at 12.5 points means little if the line is now 15.5.
  • Role change. Minutes, batting order spot, and lineup injuries shift the whole distribution.
  • Blowouts and short games. Garbage time and rain-shortened outings drag results down for reasons that have nothing to do with skill.

What does edge measure?

Edge (expected value, or EV%) compares your estimated true probability against the probability the sportsbook’s price implies. If you think a prop hits 55% of the time and the price implies 52%, you have a small positive edge. If the price implies 58%, you’re paying too much.

The mechanics come down to implied probability. A price of -130 implies roughly 56.5%. A price of +130 implies about 43.5%. Both together add up to more than 100%, and that extra chunk is the vig.

Why a 60% hit rate can still be a losing bet

Because price decides everything. A 60% historical hit rate at -110 is interesting. The same 60% at -245 is not, because -245 already implies roughly a 71% chance. You’d need the player to clear far more often than history suggests just to break even.

How do you read hit rate and edge together?

Use hit rate as a filter and edge as the trigger. Hit rate answers “is this player’s range even near the line?” Edge answers “am I getting paid enough for it?”

A workable order of operations:

  1. Screen on hit rate to shrink the board to props where the player realistically lives near the number.
  2. Check the line the hit rate was measured at. If the current line is higher, the history is stale.
  3. Convert the price to implied probability and strip the vig.
  4. Look at consistency, not just the average. A player who alternates 4 and 20 points is a different bet than one who scores 11 to 13 every night.
  5. Shop the price across books. A move from -130 to -110 can flip a marginal bet.

Step five is the least glamorous and the most reliable. Small price improvements compound over hundreds of bets, which is why line shopping across roughly 60 sportsbooks matters more than any single read.

What about MLB, where lines are tiny?

Baseball props expose the problem even harder, because so many lines sit at 0.5. A 0.5 hits prop is a yes-or-no question, so hit rate looks stable while the price does all the work.

From the same StatsBench snapshot (an August 2026 Yankees at Orioles example), three props all showed a 60% hit rate over ten games:

  • Jazz Chisholm Jr. hits o/u 0.5 at -165
  • Trent Grisham hits o/u 0.5 at -185
  • Leody Taveras hits + runs + RBIs o/u 1.5 at +125

-185 implies about 64.9%. So a 60% history at that price is not evidence of value, it’s evidence the market already priced the player as a likely hit. The variance part nobody wants to hear

A real edge of 2% does not feel like an edge for a long time. Over 50 bets, you can be right about the math and still be down. That’s not a broken process, that’s the sample being too small to show up.
