Hit rate percentages are the first number most prop bettors look at, and the one they misread most often. A 60% hit rate sounds strong. Priced at -155, it’s a losing bet. The percentage only means something once you compare it to the price on the screen.

What does a hit rate percentage actually tell you?
A hit rate is the share of past games where a player cleared the line. Six overs in ten games is 60%. That’s it. It’s a backward-looking count, not a forecast.
The number is useful because it’s concrete. It’s dangerous because it hides three things: the price, the sample, and the margin. A player who beat a rebounds line by half a board six times looks identical to one who doubled it six times.
Treat a hit rate as a starting question, not an answer.
- Price: what win rate do you need just to break even?
- Sample: ten games or forty? Same games or different roles?
- Margin: comfortable clears or coin-flip finishes?
Answer those three and the percentage starts earning its keep. Skip them and you’re betting on a headline.
How to convert a price into the hit rate you need
Every American price implies a break-even win rate. That’s your bar. If your hit rate sits below it, the bet loses money over time no matter how good the streak looked.
The quick math for negative odds: odds divided by (odds + 100). For -110, that’s 110 / 210, or about 52.4%. For positive odds: 100 divided by (odds + 100). At +110, that’s 100 / 210, again about 47.6%.

Reading real props: same percentage, very different bets

Same 60%, five different verdicts. The Kirk walks line at +150 clears its bar by twenty points. The Clement hits line at -200 needs 66.7% and only shows 60%, so the recent form doesn’t cover the price.

How many games do you need before a percentage means anything?
Ten games is a headline, not evidence. Flip a fair coin ten times and you’ll land on 6 heads roughly one run in five. A 60% hit rate over ten games is barely distinguishable from a 50% player having a normal week.
Rough guide for how much weight to give a sample:
- Under 10 games: context only. Use it to spot a role change, not to price a bet.
- 10 to 20 games: suggestive. Fine as a filter, weak as a reason.
- 20 to 40 games: the sweet spot for most in-season props.
- 40 plus: solid, but check that the role hasn’t changed midway.

Why the margin behind the percentage matters
Two players both hit a 15.5 kills line 6 of 10 times. One averaged 21 kills in the wins and 8 in the losses. The other cleared by exactly one kill every time. Same percentage, very different distributions.
The second player is a coin flip waiting to happen. A slightly tougher matchup, one fewer round, and the streak breaks. The first player has cushion.

Most bad prop bets start with a real number used badly. Watch for these.
- Line drift. A player hit 6 of 10 on a 1.5 line, but tonight’s line is 2.5. The percentage describes a different bet.
- Role change. Minutes, batting order, and lineup slots move. Old games with a different role aren’t comparable.
- Opponent mix. Six clears against bottom-tier defenses tell you little about a top-tier matchup.

A simple workflow for using hit rates well
Here’s the sequence that keeps you honest. It takes about ninety seconds per prop once you’ve done it a few times.
- Convert the price to a break-even percentage. That’s your bar.
- Check the gap. Is the historical rate above the bar by a real margin, or by one game?
- Check the sample. Same line, same role, enough games.
- Shop the price. Moving from -156 to -140 lowers the bar you need to clear by about 2.6 points. Free improvement.
